U.S. judge: Trump administration cannot proceed with large-scale layoffs or restructuring plans
On the evening of May 9th, local time, a U.S. federal judge ruled that the Trump administration could not continue to advance large-scale layoffs or major restructuring plans for multiple federal agencies in accordance with an executive order issued in February this year. U.S. Senior District Judge Susan Illston approved a temporary restraining order jointly proposed by federal employee unions, local governments, and external organizations that rely on federal services. These organizations believe that the Trump administration's related actions have exceeded the scope of legal authorization. The temporary restraining order is valid for two weeks, during which the government will be prohibited from approving or implementing so-called "Agency RIF and Reorganization Plans" (ARRPs), which are plans aimed at implementing large-scale layoffs, or reducing or abolishing entire departments under the agency. The judge also ruled to suspend the layoffs or project cuts made by the "Department of Government Efficiency" in accordance with the executive order and related directives.
