Shou Zi Chew, the chief executive of TikTok, will attend the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20, according to The New York Times.
Wednesday's report cited people familiar with the matter as saying that the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee extended an invitation to Chew.
Chew was invited to sit in a position of honor on the dais," people familiar with the matter said. And traditionally, former presidents, family members and other important guests sit there.
He will join U.S. tech moguls such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk at the event, the report said.
The move by the Trump team is significant at a time when a U.S. bill involving the mandatory sale or nationwide blocking of TikTok is set to go into effect on Sunday.
A law signed by President Joe Biden last April requires TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app by Jan. 19 or face an immediate ban.
TikTok has been seeking to overturn the "sell-or-ban" law for most of the past year. And the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on TikTok's appeal in the coming days.
Meanwhile, news broke Tuesday that Trump is considering issuing an executive order suspending the TikTok law for 60 to 90 days after taking office.
Trump, who has more than 14 million followers on the short-form video platform, has said he hopes to honor previous campaign promises.
In fact, Trump met with Chew at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in late December last year, and said in a press conference before their meeting, "I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok."
