Hon Hai is not giving up on its plan to buy a part of Nissan, sending its head of electric vehicles to France for talks with Renault, according to Taiwan media reports.

Industry sources revealed Thursday that Hon Hai Chairman Young Liu has authorized Jun Seki, chief strategy officer for EVs with a background in Nissan, to take charge of the matter.

Seki has worked for Nissan for 33 years, serving as executive director of Nissan, president of Dongfeng Motor Co. and senior vice president of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

He then left Nissan in January 2020 to become president and COO of Nidec in the wake of an unsuccessful bid to become Nissan's CEO.

In January 2023, Seki came to Hon Hai to become the Chief Strategy Officer for EVs. And in April of this year, he was named CEO of the MIH Consortium, Hon Hai's electric vehicle alliance.

The reports said Seki had previously expressed Hon Hai's desire to acquire shares directly to Nissan, but Nissan did not agree, so the company turned its target to Renault, Nissan's major shareholder.

According to the latest news, Seki and his team are currently negotiating with Renault in France, seeking to buy Renault's stake in Nissan.

Japanese media outlet Diamond Online reported Wednesday that the memorandum of understanding between Nissan and Honda contains special clauses that could limit Hon Hai's acquisition of Nissan's stake.

However, the industry sources said Nissan will hold a board meeting next Monday to decide whether to approve the memorandum of understanding to merge with Honda.
