WHO director-general: no variant has yet emerged as a substantial threat to existing vaccines

GENEVA, May 24 - The 74th World Health Assembly opened on May 24.

Commenting on the global situation of the Covid-19 epidemic, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Mr. Tedros Adhanom, said that so far, no mutant coronavirus has emerged that could seriously undermine the effectiveness of existing vaccines, diagnostics, or therapies.

According to the WHO weekly outbreak bulletin, the organization's current list of variant coronaviruses of concern includes B.1.1.7, first reported in the United Kingdom; B.1.351, first reported in South Africa; P.1, first reported in Brazil; and B.1.617, first reported in India.
