Asia Tech Wire (July 3) -- Vietnam has overtaken India to become the world's second largest exporter of phones, according to Vietnam's Thanh Nien newspaper.

The General Statistics Office of Vietnam reported that in the first five months of 2024, Vietnam exported more than $10 billion in four major categories of goods.

Among them, the export value of computers, electronic products and parts amounted to $27.01 billion, up 31.6% year-on-year.

In addition, exports of all types of phones and parts reached $22.4 billion in the period, up more than 11% year-on-year.

Vietnam has surpassed India to become the world's second largest exporter of phones after China and the fifth largest exporter of computers, the newspaper said.

In recent years, Vietnam's exports of computers and parts, phones and parts have maintained strong growth, always ranking first in the category of goods with an export value of more than one billion dollars, the report said.

Vietnam's exports of electronic products, computers and parts accounted for only 4.8% of the Asian country's total exports in 2011, doubling to 9.6% in 2015 and maintaining a share of more than 10% thereafter, reaching 16.2% in 2023.

The export value of this category of goods has now risen rapidly to more than $57 billion.
