Asia Tech Wire (Aug 5) -- The U.S. Department of Commerce may propose a ban on the use of Chinese software in self-driving and connected cars in the coming weeks, according to Reuters.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said the U.S. government plans to issue a proposed rule banning the use of Chinese software in vehicles with Level 3 automation and above, and would also prohibit testing on U.S. roads of self-driving cars manufactured by Chinese companies.

The U.S. also plans to ban vehicles featuring advanced wireless communication modules developed by China from the country's roads.

The proposed rule would require automakers and suppliers to verify that neither their connected cars nor their advanced self-driving car software were developed in a "foreign entity of concern," including China.
