US Commerce Department subpoenas several Chinese technology companies

The U.S. Commerce Department issued subpoenas Wednesday to several Chinese companies, as a part of an ongoing effort to crack down on foreign communications technology and service that could threaten national security.

The Department did not disclose the names of the companies, saying the aim of subpoenaing is to seek information to determine whether the companies pose a security threat to U.S. Chinese embassy in Washington has not made any comments on the matter.

It happens when U.S. and Chinese officials prepare to meet in Alaska this Thursday. The meeting will be the first high-level face-to-face one between the two countries since President Joe Biden took office. What U.S. concerns about Chinese technology companies and policies is likely to be a topic in coming meeting in Alaska.
