According to media reports, Toyota Motor Corporation's self-driving subsidiary Woven Planet announced that it had acquired Carmera, a U.S.-based driverless mapping, and road data provider. The acquisition of Carmera gives Woven Planet a rapid boost in its ability to update high-definition maps automatically.
Woven Planet has not yet disclosed the exact amount of the Carmera acquisition.
Woven Planet and Carmera said in a statement that the acquisition would allow Toyota to access real-time HD maps, critical for self-driving cars to locate and navigate themselves.
Woven Planet, based in New York and Seattle, develops autonomous driving and other advanced mobility technologies. This April, the company announced it would acquire Level 5, Lyft's self-driving division, for $550 million.
Under the agreement between the two companies, Woven Planet will use Lyft's systems and fleet data to improve the development and safety of its self-driving cars. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2021, subject to regulatory approvals. The Level 5 team, which includes 300 employees, will join Woven Planet when the deal closes.
