Asian Tech Press -- WeChat, the social media app and Tencent's flagship product, announced on Tuesday that it has suspended its new user registration function.
In response, the WeChat team said, "In accordance with relevant laws and regulations, we are conducting a security technology upgrade, during which new user registration for WeChat personal accounts and public accounts will be suspended. The upgrade is expected to be completed by early August, and registration will resume after the upgrade is completed."
Some analysts believe that this is the another self-examination of business risks by WeChat, whose initiative is in Tencent, completely different from the top-down “absolute penality order" imposed on Didi.
Risk self-examination is a routine move for Internet companies. In March this year, LinkedIn stopped opening its registration function for new users in China to ensure that all content and services provided by the platform are "legal and compliant".
