National Business Wire (Dec 21) -- Japan's Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced on Wednesday that it sold more than 50 million PS5 game consoles worldwide.

As of Dec. 9, the company's PlayStation 5 console (PS5), which it launched in November 2020, saw sales of more than 50 million units, SIE said in a statement.

SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan said, "Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners."

The company is looking for a strong performance from the PS5 during the holiday shopping season, in order to reach its sales target of a record 25 million units in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.

In January, SIE announced that as of December 2022, the PS5 had surpassed 30 million units sold.

Considering the latest sales update, the gaming giant has only sold 20 million units of the PS5 worldwide in the last 11 months or so.

Obviously, it seems that such a sales rate is not quite enough to help SIE achieve sales of an additional 25 million units by the first quarter of next year.
