Asia Tech Wire (May 23) -- A regulator has fined South Korean Internet giant Kakao 15.1 billion won (a$11 million) for leaking user data.

South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) on Thursday fined Kakao 15.1 billion won ($11 million) for leaking the personal data of about 65,000 users.

Remarkably, this is the highest penalty that a domestic company in South Korea has ever received.

The commission, which approved the fine in a plenary session, found that Kakao's lax review and protection measures for user data led to the massive data breach.
