Asia Tech Wire (Sep 25) -- Meta Platforms will not immediately join the Artificial Intelligence Pact, an interim measure before the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act comes into full effect, a company spokesperson said Tuesday.

EU lawmakers agreed in May to the AI Pact, the first rules governing the development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

The AI Act obliges companies to provide a detailed summary of the data used to train AI models.

Last month, the European Commission said that rules related to the AI Act will be phased in, with certain rules coming into effect six or 12 months after the law's adoption, and the majority of the rules coming into effect on Aug. 2, 2026.

Until the law comes into force, the EU has been encouraging companies to voluntarily sign up to the AI Pact to fulfill the main obligations in the rules.

"We welcome harmonised EU rules and are focusing on our compliance work under the AI Act at this time," a Meta spokesperson said, adding that the company may join the AI Pact at a later stage.
