Asia Tech Wire (July 17) -- Japanese IT services company Fujitsu Ltd. said on Tuesday that it has invested in U.S. generative artificial intelligence startup Cohere.

The two companies plan to develop Takane, a Japanese language model, but Fujitsu did not disclose the amount of the investment.

The Japanese language model, based on Cohere's enterprise-grade large language model (LLM), will learn Japanese business terms and other data provided by Fujitsu, it said.

Takane has parameters of 50 billion to 100 billion, compared to 1.76 trillion for the GPT-4 model of OpenAI, developer of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, a Cohere competitor.
