Asian Tech Press --Alphabet Inc.'s Google announced Monday that Apricot, a new subsea cable that will connect Japan, Guam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia, is expected to launch in 2024 and could significantly increase the resiliency of Google Cloud and digital services.

Apricot is the latest project in Google's global subsea cable investment program. Other projects include Curie, Dunant, Equiano, Firmina and Grace Hopper, which Google has funded, as well as JGA, INDIGO and Havfrue, which Google has partnered with other companies to lay.

Currently Google has invested in 18 subsea cables, 27 cloud regions and 82 cloud zones around the world.

Bikash Koley, vice president and head of Google Global Networking, pointed out in the announcement that Google had announced the Echo subsea cable connecting the United States, Singapore, Guam and Indonesia earlier this year.

The latest Apricot and Echo will form an interconnected and supported submarine cable system, providing multiple paths in and out of Asia, including dedicated routes through South Asia, significantly increasing the flexibility of Google Cloud and digital services for network users.

The creation of these two cables will bring Asian businesses and start-ups lower latency, more bandwidth, and a more stable and resilient network connection between Southeast Asia, North Asia and the United States, Koley said.

Koley further stated that this type of investment in network infrastructure can have a tangible positive impact and contribution to regional economic activity.
