Shein is an emerging cross-border e-commerce platform in China. Relying on a big data-based business model, the platform has topped the download charts. But recently, the company has been hit with complaints from several apparel brands for allegedly infringing on intellectual property rights.
Recently, a series of apparel brands have alleged that Shein's success stems from "deliberate and calculated" infringement of others' intellectual property rights.
Recently, AirWair International, the "Dr. Martens" footwear line maker, took Shein to court for selling counterfeit goods on the platform. The plaintiff claimed that more than 20 counterfeit items, including the so-called "Martin boots," were available on Shein at a fraction of the actual price of Dr. Martens's products.
In a complaint filed in a California court, AirWave alleges that Shein and its sister platform Romwe sold counterfeit products and used photos of authentic Dr. Martens products to mislead consumers into buying fake products.
Shein, however, denies the allegations. The lawsuit will go to trial later this year.
