National Business Wire (Dec 18) -- Canada will announce a phase-out of gas-powered vehicles by 2035 this week, according to reports.

Canada is on track to announce new regulations this week that will require all new vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, multiple reports said.

The new rules, known as the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, requires that zero-emission vehicles, including battery electric, plug-in and hydrogen models, must account for 20% of all new car sales by 2026.

Moreover, the share increases to 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.

The Toronto Star said in a report that the new regulations aren't about forcing new technology on consumers, but about making sure that people who want to buy an electric car can get one sooner, without a long wait.
