Asia Tech Wire (Aug 22) -- U.S. chip giant AMD will set up R&D centers in Tainan and Kaohsiung, according to an announcement by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs.

AMD is due to move into the two R&D sites within this year to conduct various R&D such as heterogeneous integration, silicon photonics (SiPh), and AI chips.

About 33 Taiwanese companies will participate in AMD's R&D program, driving NT$15 billion in new investment.

Taiwan authorities approved AMD's NT$5.33 billion investment plan at the end of July, for which a NT$3.31 billion subsidy will also be provided.
