Meta is ending its third-party fact-checking program in favor of a Community Notes model, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
Similar to Elon Musk's X, Meta will not write community notes or decide which notes will appear; community notes will be written and rated by contributing users.
Meta said it will streamline its content policy by removing restrictions on topics like immigration and gender, focusing on illegal and serious violations.
In addition, it plans to take a "more personalized" approach to political content.
The initiatives will first be implemented in the U.S., replacing a fact-checking service that was previously carried out by an independent third party.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the adjustment was partly influenced by political factors such as former President Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
