The Thai government has approved China's Sunwoda to invest nearly $1.5 billion to build battery factories in the country.

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) announced Thursday that it approved Sunwoda Automotive Energy Technology (Thailand) Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Sunwoda, to invest more than 50 billion baht ($1.48 billion) to build battery production facilities in the country.

Sunwoda will build two plants in Chonburi province and expects the production lines to be operational this year, a statement said.

The company is also considering launching a battery recycling business in Thailand, according to BOI.
