South Korea's Supreme Court finds Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong not guilty
On July 17, the Supreme Court of South Korea issued a verdict on the improper merger and accounting fraud case of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, expressing support for two lower court rulings and upholding Lee Jae-yong's not guilty verdict. Lee Jae-yong and several Samsung Group executives "are suspected of driving up the share price of Cheil Industries and depressing the share price of Samsung C&T during the merger of the group's two companies, Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T, in order to help Lee Jae-yong inherit the management rights at the lowest cost and strengthen his influence within the Samsung Group." The South Korean prosecutors filed a lawsuit in September 2020. Afterwards, the prosecutors also prosecuted Lee Jae-yong and other Samsung executives on the grounds of "suspected of arbitrarily changing the accounting treatment standards of Samsung Biologics in 2015 and exaggerating the company's market value by 4.5 trillion won." The South Korean prosecutors accused Lee Jae-yong of violating the Capital Markets Act and dereliction of duty, and asked the court to sentence Lee Jae-yong to five years in prison and a fine of 500 million won (about 2.48 million yuan).
