OpenAI will acquire the startup io co-founded by Jony Ive for nearly $6.5 billion in an all-stock deal, acquiring a division dedicated to developing artificial intelligence devices and securing the services of Ive and other former Apple designers. The acquisition will provide OpenAI with about 55 hardware engineers, software developers, and manufacturing experts who will build a range of devices, with the first expected to be launched in 2026.
