According to Reuters, China's smartphone maker Xiaomi is in talks with Great Wall Motor (GWM) to use its factory to produce electric cars.

Xiaomi, one of the world biggest smartphone maker, is talking with GWM, China’s largest SUV and pickup manufacturer, about the use of GWM’s factory to make electric vehicles.

After the news reported, GWM’s Hong Kong stock increase by 10%, and Xiaomi’s shares rose more than 7%.

In response, GWM’s Vice President Xiaokang Fu said, “We have no comment on this matter. We welcome all relevant industry partners to work together for future.” On the matter, Xiaomi responded that everything is subject to the announcement.

For manufacturing EVs, earlier news reported that Xiaomi has regarded the manufacture of EVs as a strategic-level decision. It’s said that Xiaomi’s founder and CEO Lei Jun personally would lead the team, but the specific form and path of manufacturing EVs have not yet been determined.

It seems that Xiaomi’s car manufacturing has been on the agenda. However, there is a bad news. According to Tianyancha, a platform providing Chinese enterprise information, the trademark “Xiaomi car” has been applied for registration in Chin’s Trademark Office.

Its international classification is for advertising sales and means of transport. The applicant for the trademark is Shaoxing Yixiang Textile Co., Ltd. The current trademark status is “the trademark application is in progress”.
