Asia Tech Wire (Mar 28) -- Chinese biopharmaceutical company WuXi AppTec Co Ltd (2359.HK) has been accused of providing U.S. customer data to China, according to Reuters.

U.S. intelligence officials told senators who authored the Biosecure Act in late February that WuXi AppTec had transferred U.S. intellectual property to China without consent, Thursday's report said, citing sources.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to report a revised draft of the Biosecure Act to the Senate, which would restrict U.S. federal agencies from doing business with BGI Genomics Co., Ltd. (00676.SZ), WuXi AppTec and other Chinese biotech companies on national security grounds.

The report said that the FBI, the State Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence had given the classified briefing to about a dozen senators, alleging that WuXi AppTec and other Chinese entities were engaging in activities in the U.S. that violated U.S. national security interests.

A WuXi AppTec spokesperson said the company is not aware of any unauthorized transfer of U.S. customer information or intellectual property to China.

The spokesperson emphasized that the protection of customer information is of paramount importance to the company, and that WuXi AppTec respects and fully complies with the requirements of the U.S. federal and state governments by storing customer information in accordance with their requests.

China's embassy in Washington said that the U.S. Congress' claims that WuXi AppTec poses a national security threat were unfounded.

The embassy said that if anyone believes that WuXi AppTec or its affiliates have violated laws regarding intellectual property, they should provide compelling evidence.
