Asian Tech Press (Dec 31) -- Self-driving company Waymo has announced that its self-driving cab, Robotaxis, will use electric cars from Chinese automaker Geely. It is working with Geely to customize cars for its autonomous ride-sharing service Waymo One.
Waymo is integrating its driving technology into Geely's Extreme Krypton car. The Extreme Krypton will be redesigned for Waymo One riders, optimizing comfort and convenience through features such as generous legroom and a lower step-in height.
The Waymo Driver has an integrated software and hardware system that enables the vehicle to understand the world around it. The vehicle is equipped with radar, LIDAR and cameras for instant data collection and combines data from detailed maps and previous driving experiences to ensure passenger safety and travel efficiency.
The service is currently available in Phoenix, Arizona, where Waymo's current fleet includes the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, modified with its Driver technology.
Waymo describes the partnership with Geely as a "significant step" toward sustainable transportation through its electric fleet, and Waymo plans to add the new vehicle to its Waymo One fleet in the U.S., but a release date is not yet known.
