Asian Tech Press (Jan 17) -- Walmart Inc. is reportedly trying to enter the metaverse sector with plans to create its own cryptocurrency and NFTs.
Retail giant Walmart filed several new trademarks in late December that show its intention to make and sell virtual goods, including electronics, home decor, toys, sporting goods and personal care products, CNBC reported Sunday.
In a separate filing, the company also said it will offer virtual currency as well as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to users.
Walmart filed the application on Dec. 30 last year, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In all, seven separate applications were filed.
The U.S. retailer said in a statement that it is "continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences."
