Asian Tech Press (Apr. 15) -- U.S. linked North Korean hackers to the theft of over $600 million in cryptocurrency from NFT game Axie Infinity.
The Ronin Network, an Ethereum-linked sidechain used for play-to-earn NFT game Axie Infinity, has lost roughly $625 million worth of cryptocurrency on March 23.
Ronin and Axie Infinity operator Sky Mavis said Thursday the FBI attributed North Korea-based Lazarus Group to its crypto loss.
It said the U.S. government, specifically the Treasury Department, has sanctioned the address that received the stolen funds.
The U.S. claimed the Lazarus hacking group is controlled by the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea's primary intelligence agency. It has been accused of involvement in the "WannaCry" ransomware attacks, hacking of international banks and customer accounts, and the 2014 cyber-attacks on Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Washington is pushing the U.N. Security Council to blacklist the Lazarus Group and freeze its assets, according to a draft resolution.
