Asian Tech Press (Oct 30) -- The U.S. government has initiated antidumping duty (AD) and countervailing duty (CVD) investigations into aluminum extrusions from China and three other trading partners.

On October 25, 2023, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the initiation of AD/CVD investigations of aluminum extrusions from China, Indonesia, Mexico, and Turkey, in response to petitions filed on October 4, 2023 by the U.S. Aluminum Extruders Coalition, and the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (the United Steelworkers).

At the same time, the department launched AD investigations on aluminum extrusions from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, India, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Vietnam.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) expected to make a preliminary determination of industrial injury by November 20, 2023 at the latest.

If the ITC determines that imports of the products in question constitute substantial injury or threat of substantial injury to the U.S. domestic industry, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue to investigate the case and expect to make a preliminary determination of CVD investigations on December 28, 2023, as well as a preliminary determination of AD probes on March 12, 2024, at the latest.

Washington-based law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP said, "The case is one of the largest in recent years, with imports of aluminum extrusions from the 15 countries amounting to $3.19 billion in 2022."

Of these, the value of Aluminum Extrusions from Mexico was $650 million, with $360 million from Vietnam and $350 million from China.
