Asia Tech Wire (Oct 9) -- U.S. government considers splitting up Google amid search monopoly concerns.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a document Tuesday presenting a federal court with a range of potential options, from behavioral restrictions to a breakup, to address what a judge said was Google's unlawful monopoly position in search.
The filing states that the government is considering a "full range of tools" to restore competition, including "structural" adjustments to Google's business to prevent it from using products such as the Chrome browser or the Android operating system to give Google's search engine to gain an advantage.
In a blog post, Google responded that DOJ's initial proposals to reform the search engine market were "radical and sweeping" and could have "negative unintended consequences for American innovation and America's consumers."
