TSMC has confirmed that the company is evaluating plans to build a factory in Japan during its second-quarter analyst conference call on Thursday.

TSMC CEO Dr. C. C. Wei revealed that they are evaluating plans to build a plant in Japan, but he did not disclose specific information about the plan.

During the conference call, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu said that no final decision has been made regarding constructing a plant in Japan and that the outcome will depend on customer demand.

Previously, it was reported that TSMC is evaluating plans to build a chip factory in Kumamoto Prefecture in western Japan. This factory will be close to a Sony factory, and if the final decision is made to build, it will be their first factory in Japan.

At the end of last month, media reports said TSMC would join forces with Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi Electric to build a factory. TSMC will be holding 50% of the shares, and the three Japanese companies will hold the remaining 50%. The investment is up to 1.6 trillion yen ($14.57 billion), which is also higher than the investment in the U.S. factory.
