Think tank: Japan's economic loss will reach 1 trillion 800 billion yen if canceling Tokyo Olympics
May.26,2021

According to TBS, Japan's leading think-tank and systems integrator Nomura Research Institute (NRI) predicted that if the preparations for the Tokyo Olympics are terminated, Japan will suffer economic losses of about 1 trillion 800 billion yen.

One day before NRI's forecast was released, the U.S. State Department issued the highest level of warning on travel to Japan. International public opinion has steeply increased doubts about Japan hosting the Olympics as scheduled under the epidemic. Some Japanese media claim that this is a reason given by the U.S. for Japan to cancel the Olympics.

With only 57 days left before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, both Japanese and international public opinion are pessimistic about the games due to the lack of effective control of the epidemic in Japan. According to a poll published by the Mainichi Shimbun on the 22nd, 71% of the people believe that priority should be given to the epidemic prevention policy regarding the preparation of the Olympic Games and the epidemic prevention policy.
