Asian Tech Press -- Tesla will get involved in the electric power business in Japan by providing mega-battery to electric power companies, the Nikkei reported Thursday.

The U.S. electric vehicle giant will supply mega-battery and control system for regulating power supply and demand, promoting the efficient use of renewable energy whose power generation varies with the weather.

The mega-battery, a massive energy storage product developed by Tesla, is expected to be sold at one-fifth of the domestic market price in Japan, and is expected to reduce the cost of renewable energy use.

The Nikkei mentioned that Tesla Motors Japan, Tesla's legal entity in Japan, will first deliver mega-batteries to the base of Japanese power company Global Engineering Co., Ltd., which will be put into operation in the city of Chitose, Hokkaido in 2022.

In addition, the procurement source of the battery is China-listed Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL). CATL also supplies batteries for electric vehicles, and recently signed a new supply contract with Tesla that lasts until the end of 2025.
