Asia Tech Wire (Nov 6) -- Tencent on Wednesday announced a partnership with Visa to bring palm scan payments to the international market, with the first stop to be Singapore.
The Chinese tech giant officially unveiled its plan to take its touchless palm technology overseas and announced the partnership with Visa on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the Singapore FinTech Festival (SFF).
In the partnership, Singapore's DBS Bank Ltd., Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp (OCBC) and United Overseas Bank Ltd. (UOB) joined to provide support.
Tencent officially launched its palm scan payments service in September 2023. To activate, users align their palm with the sensor on the palm scan device, then scan the screen's QR code to register on their mobile phones. Upon successful registration, users can make payments by scanning their palms directly.
According to Tencent, users participating in the pilot will be able to pay with Tencent's touchless palm technology at Alchemist Coffee in Singapore.
Tencent said it will announce expansion plans for the project later.
