Asia Tech Wire (Feb 29) -- South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol met with Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the presidential residence in Yongsan, Seoul, on Thursday.

Yoon's chief policy secretary Sung Tae-yoon told a press conference Thursday that the two sides discussed the blueprint for building an AI digital ecosystem, Meta's plan to strengthen cooperation with Korean companies and Meta's important role as a global platform in building a digital society during the 30-minute meeting.

Yoon told Zuckerberg that Soouth Korea will be the platform for Meta's beta chatbot "Meta AI," and that Korean industry is ready to support the blueprint conceived and designed by Meta.

With elections coming up in many countries this year, Yoon added that he expects Meta and other large tech platform companies to actively fulfill their monitoring responsibilities and take appropriate measures.

Zuckerberg responded to Yoon by saying that Meta will work extensively with foreign governments such as South Korea's National Election Commission to prevent and control the spread of false information.

In addition, Zuckerberg said that Samsung has a pivotal position in the global economy, which will be a key element of Meta's cooperation with Samsung.

Zuckerberg is on a three-day visit to South Korea from Tuesday, marking his return to the country after nine years and four months.

During the visit, he met with Korean entrepreneurs such as LG Electronics CEO William Cho and the heads of several extended reality (XR) startups.

Zuckerberg had dinner with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong Wednesday, where the two sides exchanged views on cooperation programs related to AI semiconductors and XR business.

Korean media expect the two sides to also discuss cooperation programs related to the production of AI chips necessary to drive Llama 3, a large language model under development by Meta.
