Asian Tech Press (Jan 06) -- At CES (the world's largest consumer electronics technology show) on Wednesday, Sony announced new details of its next-generation virtual reality headset (PSVR2), as well as a new game for PSVR2.

At the CES, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the company's new hardware would be named PlayStation VR2, replacing the previous version of PS VR. The headset will be compatible with Sony's PlayStation 5 console, which will be released in late 2020.

According to a recent blog post from Sony, PS VR2 will come with an OLED display that supports 4K resolution and a new controller called PS VR2 Sense. Installation is also straightforward: all you have to do is plug the PSVR2 directly into your PS5 with a USB-C cable, and you're good to go.

The system will also feature eye-tracking technology and a built-in motor that generates haptic vibrations. Sony said the eye-tracking feature would provide additional input to the game character, allowing players to "interact in new and realistic ways that are more intuitive."

Although Sony did not reveal the appearance of the new headset, the company announced a trailer for a new game called "Horizon Call of the Mountain" to help users get a first glimpse of the in-game experience. The game is set in the same context as Sony's action role-playing game series Horizon. In Horizon, players battle dinosaur-like machines in a post-apocalyptic world.

Sony's official PS VR2 hardware announcement comes at the right time, just in time for the current metaverse craze. Facebook's parent company Meta and other companies are catching on to the hot new technology trend of the metaverse. It's a shared virtual experience in which users can work, play and interact with each other, and many iterations of the metaverse include VR technology.
