Asian Tech Press (Nov 22) -- Japanese electronics company Sony Group Corp. has been filing patents for its PlayStation 5 (PS5) hardware and software in recent months, all of which hint at its potential for future improvements to the service and technology, Gamerant reported Sunday.
The report said that some of the patents recently filed by Sony include a multi-GPU system for cloud gaming, which is designed to enhance the graphics capabilities when playing cloud games on its PlayStation systems. And the latest patents filed by it also include the PS5 faceplates.
While the PS5 is popular, it only comes in a black and white colorway, with no alternative or official custom faceplates available, making it less personalized than the Xbox Series X. And when third parties introduced custom faceplates for the PS5, what Sony did was take legal action to prohibit their production.
A year after Sony filed a lawsuit against the third-party accessory makers, a new patent document from the company was published on the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent describes an "ornamental design for a cover for an electronic device" and includes images of the PS5 and the covers provided from many different angles.
The story also mentions that it's unclear what Sony's patent application is for, which could be to prevent third-party manufacturers from selling PS5 faceplates, or it could be to launch official custom ccovers. And everything will not be known until Sony's next move.
