Asia Tech Wire (Aug 23) -- SoftBank Corp. a telecom subsidiary of SoftBank Group, is considering a 100 billion yen ($686 million) investment in electronics maker Sharp.
SoftBank, which seeks to build data centers geared toward artificial intelligence (AI), is in talks to buy a portion of Sakai Display Products Corporation (SDP), Sharp's 10th-generation large-size LCD panel plant for TVs, a process that has led to the proposed contribution.
However, the funding negotiations have stalled, and it is unclear whether the two sides will be able to finalize an agreement.
Sharp announced Wednesday that SDP, the only remaining TV LCD panel plant in Japan, has completely stopped production.
