Asia Tech Wire (Aug 13) -- South Korean chipmaker SK hynix is expanding DRAM production, according to the Chosun Daily.

Citing industry insiders, the Korean newspaper reported that SK hynix is increasing DRAM capacity at its fabrication plant M16 in Icheon.

The company has ordered core equipment from major equipment suppliers, and the equipment is due to be available from Q4 this year, with the increase in capacity starting early next year.

The equipment will help SK hynix add to the plant's average monthly production capacity to about 180,000 wafers from about 100,000 wafers originally, in order to accelerate catching up with rival Samsung Electronics' output.
