Sharp considers sales of semiconductor, camera module businesses to Hon Hai
Aug.13,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Aug 13) -- Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp recently said it is considering selling its semiconductor business and camera module business for smartphones to its Taiwanese parent company Hon Hai in the current fiscal year.

Sharp's new president Masahiro Okitsu said the reason for choosing Hon Hai as the buyer is that the two sides already have a cooperative relationship and the cooperation can bring synergies.

Okitsu added that he was not in a position to disclose more details about the sale amount because negotiations have just begun.

In the small and medium-sized LCD panel business, Sharp plans to reduce production capacity, and will transfer about 150-160 employees to other companies by the end of September.

In addition, Sharp's 10th-generation large-size LCD panel plant for TVs, Sakai Display Products Corporation (SDP), located in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, is due to shut down production by the end of August.
