Asia Tech Wire (Aug 13) -- Samsung Electronics has set up an image quality laboratory for contact image sensors (CIS) in a bid to catch up with Sony, according to Korean economic newspaper Sedaily.

The report said Samsung Electronics recently set up a CIS image quality laboratory within the System LSI division.

The laboratory built a variety of indoor and outdoor shooting environments to test the CIS performance, helping it to strengthen the technical competitiveness of high-quality image sensors to accelerate catching up with Sony.

According to market research firm TSR, Samsung held a 13.7% revenue share of the global image sensor market in 2023, a far cry from Sony's 52.7% share.

However, after launching the industry's first 200-megapixel (MP) image sensor in 2021, Samsung has been catching up with Sony to maintain its lead in high-megapixel products.
