Asian Tech Press (Sep 23) -- South Korean chipmaker Samsung Electronics Co. will beat TSMC to produce HW 4.0 self-driving chip for the U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc, KED Global reported Thursday.

The report said that several industry sources revealed that Samsung will beat TSMC to win the order from Tesla.

Tesla and Samsung's foundry division have been working on the design and samples of the chip since early this year, the report said, citing one of the sources familiar with the matter. Recently, Tesla decided to outsource the HW 4.0 self-driving chip to Samsung, a decision that is almost certain.

The hardware 4 (HW 4.0) chip is the successor to the HW 3.0 self-driving chip used in Tesla's current vehicles, which is made by Samsung.

Samsung is reportedly planning to start mass production of Tesla's HW 4.0 chip using 7nm technology at its plant in the city of Hwaseong, South Korea, from the fourth quarter of this year at the earliest.
