According to statistics released by market research firm TrendForce, global DRAM sales in the second quarter of this year rose 26% YoY to $24.114 billion, with Samsung Electronics (208.25, 0.00, 0.00%) ranking first with a slightly higher market share of 43.6% YoY. SK Hynix ranking second with a 27.9% market share.
According to TrendForce's analysis, DRAM buyers aggressively expanded their purchases after DRAM prices rose in the first quarter due to fears of further price increases and oversupply. Overall sales increased due to higher prices and increased outbound volumes. Demand for DRAM used in computers also increased due to the expanded home office and distance learning, and demand for products such as graphics DRAM and niche DRAM continued to be strong.
Samsung Electronics' DRAM sales increased 30.2% YoY to $10.51 billion in the second quarter. Market share rose to 43.6% from 42% in the first quarter, and TrendForce expects that Samsung Electronics' DRAM market share is expected to reach 50% for the first time in the third quarter.
SK Hynix's DRAM sales rose 20.8% QoQ to $6.72 billion in the second quarter, and its market share fell to 27.9% from 29% in the first quarter, still ranking second. Micron Technology (71.74, 1.51, 2.15%) ranked third with a 22.6% market share.
