According to the sales data released by major Korean automakers on the 1st, the five major automakers Hyundai, Kia, Korea GM, Renault Samsung, and SsangYong Motor, sold 628,835,000 units globally in May, up 37.6% year-on-year and down 7.9% compared to April.
The export growth was positive, benefiting from the low base of last year, thus boosting the overall sales.
However, domestic demand fell 15% from the previous month due to plant shutdowns and production cuts caused by chip shortages, 124,145,000 units sold in May.
Among the five major automakers, except for Hyundai Motor, Kia, and SsangYong Motor, the remaining two companies experienced negative growth.
