S.Korea to pass legislation to ban Google, Apple commission dominance
Aug.30,2021

Asian Tech Press (Aug 30) -- South Korea is expected to become the first country in the world today to pass legislation ending the dominance of Apple and Google's payment systems in their app stores.

The amendment to the Telecommunications Business Act, also known as the "Anti-Google law" in South Korea, which would force companies to allow users to freely choose their app payment providers, is up for a final vote on Monday.

Given the ruling party's overwhelming majority in South Korea's legislature, the amendment is almost certain to pass in a vote at the National Assembly. It would open the door for other software developers to deal directly with users, bypassing Apple's and Google's comission dominance.

Faced with previous antitrust allegations, Apple announced last Thursday that it would change App Store policies and practices to allow apps to use third-party payment channels, and create a $100 million Small Developer Assistance Fund to compensate developers, Bloomberg reported.
