Asian Tech Press (Nov 23) -- Chipmaker Qualcomm has announced that Snapdragon will become a separate product brand.
Qualcomm has been using the same naming and numbering scheme for its SoCs since 2013, but that seems to be changing now. The company said it will use a new simplified and consistent naming system going forward, and the new naming system will start with the latest Snapdragon flagship mobile platform.
Qualcomm said it will remove "Qualcomm" from the chip name and revise the numbering system. The naming system for Snapdragon mobile platforms will become a single digit plus a generational number, in line with the naming principles of other categories of platforms. Qualcomm's recently announced SoCs might be the last ones to adopt the old naming convention.
Qualcomm expects to announce the next generation of Snapdragon flagships at the Snapdragon Technology Summit 2021, which will be held on December 1, BST. With all of the above in mind, the company's next-generation flagship chipset could be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
