Asia Tech Wire (July 11) -- Chinese tech company Pinduoduo's international e-commerce platform Temu has entered over 70 countries and regions, an executive said.

Zhu Zheng, senior vice president and chief development officer of Pinduoduo, recently revealed that Temu has penetrated into more than 100 manufacturing industry zones in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong and Anhui since its launch in September 2022, and has promoted high-quality manufacturing products to enter more than 70 countries and regions, including North America, Europe and Asia.

Temu provides overseas consumers with a full range of goods including home gardening, pet supplies, clothing, shoes and bags, electronics, beauty and sports, Zhu said.

But as it expands, the platform faces increasing regulatory challenges.

Following in the footsteps of platforms such as AliExpress, TikTok and Shein, Temu formally entered the European Union's list of "Very large online platform (VLOP)" at the end of May.

Temu came into the EU market in April last year, and in the six months ending March 31, 2024, its average monthly active users (MAUs) in the EU were about 75 million.

Under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), the bloc will designate companies with more than 45 million users as VLOPs, which will need to take additional measures to combat illegal and harmful content and counterfeit products on their platforms.

Companies that violate the DSA requirements can be subject to penalties of up to 6% of their annual worldwide turnover.
