OpenAI reportedly eyes further departure from nonprofit structure
Sep.5,2024

Asia Tech Wire (Sep 5) -- OpenAI is considering moving further away from its nonprofit structure, according to the Financial Times.

The AI organization has been in discussions with investors about moving further away from its current nonprofit structure, including potentially removing existing caps on profits for investors, making it more investor-friendly, the report said.

However, OpenAI denied the reporting, stating that "the nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist."

The Wall Street Journal previously reported that OpenAI plans to raise several billion dollars in a new funding round.

In addition to venture capital firm Thrive Capital, which is reportedly contributing $1 billion and is the lead investor, Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia may also participate in the round.
