Asia Tech Wire (Oct 25) -- OpenAI plans to release its next-generation frontier model, Orion, by December 2024, according to The Verge.
Unlike the previous GPT-4o and GPT-o1, Orion will not initially be widely released through ChatGPT.
OpenAI plans to first grant access to companies it works closely with to develop their own products and features, the sources said.
Engineers within Microsoft are preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November, the people said.
While OpenAI internally views Orion as the successor to GPT-4, the report said it's unclear whether the company will refer to it as GPT-5.
OpenAI executives have said that Orion could be 100 times more powerful than GPT-4, which is separate from its o1 inference model released in September.
