Omdia: 12.5 million consumer VR headsets to be sold in 2021
Dec.13,2021

Asian Tech Press (Dec 13) -- According to Omdia's "Consumer VR Headsets and Content Revenue Forecast 2021-2026", 12.5 million headsets will be sold in 2021, and spending on VR content will reach $2 billion; by 2026, the consumer VR market will be worth $16 billion, up 148% from 2021.

Omdia principal analyst George Jijiashvili commented: "VR all-in-ones have quickly become mainstream devices, accounting for 83% of the number of consumer VR headsets sold in 2021. This is largely driven by the success of the Meta Quest2, which delivers on the promise of an immersive, unrestricted VR experience at a low price point."

Omdia expects the line between virtual and augmented reality to become increasingly blurred. From 2022 onwards, there will be a greater focus on 'see-through' VR capabilities, which allow users to view an augmented version of their real-life environment through a VR headset. Meta's upcoming Project Cambria headset will offer an improved version of this technology. The see-through VR headset will serve as a short-term transition between VR and unreal, mainstream consumer AR glasses, which are still years away.
