On August 12, Lin Wenqin, a young entrepreneur in the Chinese catering industry, died in a traffic accident at the age of 31 while driving an NIO ES8 with the autopilot function (NOP Pilot status) enabled.
Nio's brand department responded that Navigate on Pilot (NOP) is not the same as autonomous driving, and results of subsequent investigations will be public.
Nio's vehicle had caused two fatal accidents within a month. On July 30, a Nio EC6 driver was killed in a severe crash on a highway in Shanghai.
The incidents have aroused much attention and discussion among netizens. There are concerns about the level of intelligent driving assistance of NIO.
Before the NIO ES8 driving accident, ByteDance's car information and service platform Dongchedi has performed a professional AEB test on NIO EC6. The Automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is a safety feature that could avoid collisions and effectively protect pedestrians.
NIO EC6's AEB function failed in the static test at 60km/h. Although the system detected the vehicle and decelerated, it still rear-ended the vehicle in front of it. The system also failed the 30km/h static frontal crash test and crashed into the experimental vehicle.
The results show that the AEB function on NIO has technical limitations that do not allow the owner to use its intelligent assisted driving functions with complete confidence.
