Asian Tech Press (Dec 14) -- Nike announced the acquisition of RTFKT, a virtual sneaker design company, continuing to accelerate the company's metaverse efforts.

RTFKT was founded in 2020 and also produces NFT collectibles and meme emojis. Users will be able to purchase virtual land and other digital assets, such as clothing, for virtual characters in the metaverse.

Nike CEO John Donahoe said in a statement: "This is another step in Nike's accelerated digital transformation, allowing us to serve athletes and creators who are part of the sports, creative and gaming communities."

Last month, Nike announced a partnership with video game platform Roblox to launch the "Nike Virtual Worlds" in the metaverse for the first time.
